El Hierro
A green powerhouse in the middle of the Atlantic. The smallest of the Canary Islands leads in terms of sustainable development and has managed to go 18 days using 100% green energy.
Facts & Figures
The smallest and least known of the islands, it is the nearest to South American continent (4.000km). El Hierro boasts a peaceful, laid back lifestyle; eminently rural but has a very modern characteristic. It is an island which aims to implant a 100% renewable energy policy and is well on its way to doing so. A hydro-wind power plant, solar panel infrastructure and tidal energy in experimental phase has allowed for the island to go for 18 days using green energy. The island has attracted the EU´s full attention and is seen as a laboratory territory. Accommodation is sparse but good and perfectly suited for small incentive groups (especially with a strong corporate responsibility ethos) as well as off the beaten track leisure clients.
